Oval: Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has questioned Indian bowlers, saying their performance in the World Test Championship (WTC) final showed that they had not prepared ideally. Australia took a massive 173-run lead in the first innings on a pitch that helped fast bowlers, leaving India in danger of another ICC final defeat. Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami bowled brilliantly in Australia’s first innings but Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur could not impress much. Both these bowlers did not bowl much in the IPL. Ponting said on a question while talking to the media, ‘I think he did not leave much impact. His preparation was probably not ideal for this one Test match. All their players were in IPL. Some players from Australia were also there but some players did not play competitive cricket for three months.

Ponting said a lot also depends on individual preparation. He said, ‘I don’t know how much impact IPL has had on Indian batsmen. If you ask Virat, he will say that it is perfect for him because he has scored all kinds of runs. If you ask Rahane, he would not have been picked for this match without IPL. So it’s going to work both ways.

Ponting said, ‘I had a conversation with Shardul this morning. He said that he was feeling troubled. He got less chances to bowl in the entire IPL than the amount he bowled in one and a half days.

Ponting praised Ajinkya Rahane’s batting on this occasion and expressed surprise at his exclusion from the team. Shardul said, ‘He batted brilliantly. I said during the lunch break that when you can play like this, you wonder why he was not picked in the team. He has always been an artistic looking player. A player with good defence. His record shows that he gives his best when the team needs him the most.
