WTC Final: Mitchell Marsh returns to Australian Test team, Warner also in the team

Melbourne. David Warner, Matt Renshaw, Marcus Harris and Mitchell Marsh have been named in the Australian Test squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the first two Ashes Tests.

Australia’s current fastest bowler Lance Morris has been left out of the 17-man squad, who is out of action for at least six weeks with a back injury. Another fast bowler, Michael Neser, has been overlooked even though he is a better bowler for English conditions and is currently playing county cricket.

Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb, Mitchell Swepson and Matt Kuhnemann have been left out of the squad for the India tour, while Josh Inglis is the only new face in the squad. The uncapped wicket-keeper batsman has been included in the squad as back-up to Alex Carey. Todd Murphy has also retained his place.

Chief selector George Bailey said conditions in England are very different from India, so there have been places for a few players who can be useful there. A squad review will take place after the WTC final and the first two Ashes Tests, and squads will be selected for the next three Ashes Tests.

Renshaw, who played in the middle order on the tour of India, scored only four runs in three innings and was not given a place in the new central contract. But recently he played for Australia A and scored two centuries against New Zealand A. However, during this time he opened the batting and is being seen as an alternative to David Warner, who is currently going through poor form and is in the last phase of his career. Apart from Renshaw, the team also has another opening batsman option, Harris, who also got a place in the central contract.

All-rounder Marsh has been called into the Test squad for the first time since the 2019 Oval Ashes Test, where he took a five-wicket haul. He was in excellent form in the ODI series against India and has also bowled well during the IPL. The squad has only four premier fast bowlers in the form of captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland.
