WTT Star Contender Goa 2024: Manika, Shreeja and Archana reach pre-quarterfinals

Indian table tennis players Manika Batra, Shreeja Akula and Archana Kamat registered spectacular wins here on Saturday to enter the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contenders Goa. Manika, ranked 38th in the world, registered an easy 3-1 (11-6 9-11 11-9 11-7) win over South Korea’s Suh Hyo Won.
25-year-old Akula from Hyderabad also continued her great form and defeated world number 30 Hana Goda 3-0 (11-8 11-6 14-12). Earlier, Kamat achieved a thrilling 3-2 victory over Gianni Shao of Portugal. He came back after losing the first game and won 3-2 (9-11 11-5 11-5 8-11 11-5). Whereas Yashaswini Ghorpade lost to world number 13 player Xiaojin Yang 0-3 (1-11 5-11 5-11).
In men’s singles, the top two seeds Hugo Calderano (ranked seventh) and Felix Lebrun of France (ranked eighth) entered the round of 16 with easy wins. India’s pair of Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah lost 1-3 (7-11 11-7 8-11 9-11) to Chinese Taipei’s Kao Cheng Jui and Chuang Chih Yuan in the men’s doubles quarterfinals. In the last eight of women’s doubles, South Korea’s Shin Yubin and Eon Jhi defeated Sayali Vani and Tanisha Kotecha 3-0 (11-2 12-10 11-2).
Meanwhile, the pair of Diya Chitale and Akula lost 0-3 (9-11 8-11 8-11) to Chinese Taipei’s Ai Ching and Li Yu Jun. Manush and Diya presented a tough challenge in the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles category but they lost to the Spanish pair of Alvaro Robles and Maria Jiao 2-3 (5-11 11-6 14-12 8-11 6-11).
