New Delhi: Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan said that he is “surprised” that many fast bowlers are spending time on the sidelines due to recurring injuries. He also said that something is going wrong somewhere that he is suffering such “serious injuries”. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, who has been away from cricket for several months, right-arm fast bowler Deepak Chahar and the famous Krishna have also been away from the field for a long time due to injuries. Chahar made a comeback in the current IPL but missed a few games in between for Chennai Super Kings due to a hamstring injury while Prasad had a back issue which resulted in a stress fracture. Zaheer while talking to the media Said, ‘ Like you, I am also surprised by this. You mentioned the bowlers but some of the batsmen are also facing serious injuries. This is beyond my understanding and definitely has something to do with the combination. “Some things need to be looked at carefully, what they have been doing throughout the season, their training and their rest-recovery ratio and a lot of other things,” he added.

The former fast bowler said, ‘It is very difficult to tell in just one word (to describe) what exactly is going on, but I would say that yes, something is going wrong somewhere because all these players have been given so much. There is a big injury. But Zaheer was happy with the performances of the other two leading Indian pacers, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj, in this IPL.

He said, ‘It is wonderful to watch him play. He has kept things simple, something that is essential. I would say it’s the right way to play in the powerplay and it’s great to see bowlers (like him) leading by example, keeping things simple and not getting bogged down in the complexities of the format. Zaheer said that for Shami and Siraj, a busy IPL should not affect their workload much as there are fewer overs to bowl as compared to a Test match.

The Indian team also has to play the final of the World Test Championship against Australia from June 7. Earlier, the fast bowler expressed his dissatisfaction with the way Sunrisers Hyderabad have handled and used Umran Malik, whose pace has impressed one and all, in the ongoing IPL. Zaheer said, ‘I think Umran Malik has not been handled well by the franchise. Sunrisers could have made better use of his services and that is clear.

Mumbai Indians’ global head of cricket development Zaheer said the franchise has done well despite the absence of strike-pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer. He said, ‘When you talk about Mumbai Indians and when you see that the season has gone on, it has not been an easy season (because) first Bumrah and then Jofra Archer got out. It’s been a tough season bowling-wise but the batting has been very good – that’s how I look at it.
