13 clubs will play 156 matches in I-League 2023-24 format

New Delhi. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) league committee on Friday decided on the I-League 2023-24 format, in which 13 clubs will participate in a home-and-away double round-robin format.
Participation of clubs is subject to fulfillment of AIFF’s club licensing process. A total of 156 matches will be played in the entire season, in which each team will play 24 matches. The club that tops the table at the end of the league will be declared as the champions of the I-League 2023–24 and will get a chance to participate in the Indian Super League 2024–25. But this will be subject to the condition that they fulfill all the club licensing criteria.
AIFF Secretary General Dr Shaji Prabhakaran said, “More and more clubs are coming to participate in not only the I-League, but also in the third division. We are committed to arrive at the best decisions to make all league structures competitive This will encourage clubs to aspire to move up. From the district level to the national level, and help in the overall improvement of Indian football.”
Last season’s champions Punjab FC have already been promoted to the ISL.
And the two relegated teams from the 2022-23 I-League season – Mumbai Kenkre FC and Sudeva Delhi FC have been replaced by Delhi FC and Shillong Lajong FC as the top two teams in the 2022-23 Second Division league.
The chairman of the committee said, “Earlier, we did not have a proper tiered league structure, but that has changed. Now, the ISL, I-League, Second Division and Third Division all compete with each other to form a strong league structure. are connected.” (IANS)
