R Praggnanandhaa has virtually secured his place in the Candidates tournament by reaching the semi-finals as world number one Magnus Carlsen is likely to skip the event. Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand is the only Indian to have played in the Candidates tournament so far.
R Praggnanandhaa on Thursday 17 August defeated compatriot Arjun Erigaisi 5-4 in a sudden death tie-breaker to advance to the semi-finals of the FIDE World Chess Championship. Praggnanandhaa will take on American Fabiano Caruana in the semi-finals and will have a chance to qualify for next year’s Candidates tournament.
The top three players in this tournament will qualify for the Candidates Tournament. By reaching the semi-finals, 18-year-old R Praggnanandhaa virtually sealed his place in the Candidates tournament with world number one Magnus Carlsen likely to skip the event.
Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand is the only Indian to have played in the Candidates tournament so far. Both these Indian players had won a game each in the classical series on Wednesday after which the match was drawn till the tie-breaker.
