In such a situation, the decision of Karel High Court became very important for the film. The teaser and trailer of ‘The Kerala Story’ were also shown in the courtroom during the hearing on Friday.
The court said – there is something called freedom of speech and expression
In the Kerala High Court, a bench of Justice N Nagresh, Justice Sophie Thomas and Justice Mohammed Nias CP heard the matter. The court said in its order that the Central Board of Film Certification (Censor Board) has issued a certificate to the film for public viewing. The bench asked the petitioners that none of you have seen the film and the makers have added a disclaimer that the film is a fictional version. Justice Nagresh said during the hearing, ‘There is something called freedom of speech and expression. They have artistic freedom, we have to balance that too.
‘What is there in the film that is against Islam and religion’
The court asked the petitioners, ‘What is there in the film that is against Islam? There is no allegation against any religion, but only against the ISIS terrorist organization. What’s wrong with that? Nothing will happen just by showing the film. The teaser of the film was released in November. What was objectionable in the film? What is wrong with saying that Allah is the only God? Our country gives citizens the right to believe.
Petition for cancellation of censor certificate also rejected
During the hearing of the petitions demanding cancellation of the censor certificate of the film, the court said, ‘Many films about such terrorist organizations have come before. In the past too, there have been dialogues against Hindu monks and Christian priests in many films. Now what’s so special? How does this film create communalism.
The petitioner said – the film will poison the minds of innocent people
To this the petitioners argued that the film would poison the minds of innocent people. So far no investigating agency has said that there is ‘love jihad’ in Kerala.

Makers turned around, said – this is the story of three girls
However, ‘The Kerala Story’ has been released in theatres. The film stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in lead roles. The controversy surrounding the film started with its teaser and trailer, which claimed that 32,000 women were converted in Kerala and sent to Syria to join ISIS.
