4 South films earned 750 crores in 10 days! Where are Hindi movies?

Festival releases—especially Pongal/Sankranti and Diwali—are the biggest events in the South film industry. All the top stars try to release a film during these times of the year as these are the most important festivals in South India.

This year, the Tamil film industry saw two of its top stars – Vijay and Ajith Kumar clashing at the box office with their Pongal releases. Thalapathy’s Warisu has earned around Rs 250 crore at the worldwide box office, while Ajith’s Thunivu has earned around Rs 180 crore so far.

Step forward to the Telugu film industry and we see Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya opposite Balakrishna (Balaiya) Veera Simha Reddy. Waltair Veeraiya has earned more than Rs 190 crore worldwide while Veera Simha Reddy has earned around Rs 135 crore.

These four films have managed to rake in over Rs 750 crore globally so far, which are still running houseful in theaters even after more than a week of their release.

What happens when there is a big festival and an extended holiday weekend of four or five days? Audiences need to be entertained and theaters are where they go. This means brisk business for theaters and a long holiday ensures big bucks for films that release at that time.

In the South, Pongal/Sankranti and Diwali have always seen big star releases and January 2023 was no exception. The film industry has a tradition of releasing big films and producers of films starring top stars of the industry vie for these dates.

When you analyze what Thunivu, Varisu, Waltair Veeraiyya and Veera Simha Reddy clicked at the box office in January 2023, the first obvious answer is that they all feature top stars in their respective film industries. Second – and most important – are the stories that they have endeared to a mass audience. Stories that will click with not only the youth but also with the family audience during festival times when there are holidays, a film. And this is what the directors have given for all these four films.

If Vijay’s Warisu was a family drama, Ajith’s film was about how banks are robbing the public. Chiranjeevi’s film was a family-themed action film, while Balayya’s film was about how a son fulfills his father’s wish. Each of these films also gave hit songs thanks to their music directors.

Megastars Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar have crores of fans across the world and watch their hero’s movies more than once. Not only do they watch it with their friends on the first day, first show, but they go to see the movie again with their families a few days later. The repeat audience factor is very important in the case of top stars.

Fan clubs of all these stars organize special shows in towns and cities and this leads to huge crowds. If you check social media, fans post box office collections and fan groups of rival actors try to outdo each other when it comes to the box office. In fact, we saw how Vijay’s fans and Ajith’s fans got into an argument on social media recently as to which film collected more worldwide.

At the end of the day, the fact remains that these four films grossed around Rs 750 crore at the worldwide box office. This goes to show that South Indian films have started 2023 with a bang and with more big releases to come, like Prashanth Neel’s Salaar and Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2, the trend is set to get bigger.
