40 percent of people suffering from serious diseases have suicidal tendencies: Research

Lucknow. A research has revealed that patients suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes, or who have recently undergone major surgery, are 40 percent more likely to commit suicide than those who are not ill.

Regarding this research, experts say that the sudden death of patients suffering from chronic diseases or recovering after major surgery is related to possible mental illness and such patients give signs before dying.

“If you recognize the signs, deaths can be avoided,” said Dr Adarsh ​​Tripathi, senior faculty member, department of psychiatry at KGMU.

He said, “Such patients coming to our OPD are referred by their treating doctors and are even brought in by their families in equal proportion when they are able to realize any mental problem. These patients may be around us and even in our homes.”

“Most people suffering from chronic diseases initially ask what will be the outcome of the treatment and whether they will survive the treatment or not,” said Dr Devashish Shukla, medical superintendent, Kalyan Singh Super Specialty Cancer Institute and Hospital (KSSSCIH).

Dr Shukla, a qualified psychiatrist from KGMU and a senior consultant in the department of psychiatry at Balrampur Hospital, said, “At least one or two such patients used to come to the OPD of the hospital in a week, and I can say that in the initial days “In the intervention, more than 90 per cent respond well. At KSSCIH too, patients ask about the outcome of the treatment. We identify the reason behind their fear and motivate them for treatment.”

Dr. Tripathi said, “Chronic diseases make a person apprehensive about his future life. Depression also has biological causes. Medically, with high sugar, the body releases a cellular toxin and which, in the long run, adversely affects the brain along with other vital organs. These toxins cause mental illness.

“Mental disorders are most often associated with pain-causing diseases or diseases with a high mortality rate, for example cancer,” he said. Despite advances in medical science, people think this is the end. Early detection and treatment increases survival rates but in many cases, the toxin used as medicine affects the cells. Patients may also suffer from amnesia.

“One of the chronic diseases is arthritis,” said Dr Sandeep Kapoor, director of Healthcity Hospital and an eminent joint replacement surgeon. When a patient ignores the disease for a long time and loses the ability to move even inside his room due to extreme pain, he often thinks negatively about life.”

The second category of causes that cause mental illness are related to accidents, where the patient suffers major injury, which changes their life. If they suffer from lower back pain or have to abandon the routine they followed before the accident, this has a negative impact.

Dr. Adarsh ​​Tripathi said that the first sign that a patient of depression shows is a change in behavior, where they may withdraw from social life or start expressing things in a more emotional way. They may reduce their involvement in daily life with the family or overreact to things.
