72 foreign snakes found in bags at Bengaluru Airport, 17 king cobras also seized

In a bizarre incident, customs officials at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport have seized king cobras and other protected animals, which were smuggled in on a flight from Thailand. According to reports, the said animals were packed in the check-in baggage of the Thai AirAsia flight, which landed in Bengaluru at around 10.30 pm on Wednesday night. Customs officials at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru were shocked when they found 72 snakes and 6 dead capuchin monkeys inside a bag.
“A total of 78 animals, which included 55 ball pythons (in different colours) and 17 king cobras, were found in the baggage that arrived on Air Asia flight FD 137 from Bangkok at 10:30 pm,” a release issued by Bengaluru Customs said. They were found alive and in active condition. However, six (06) capuchin monkeys were found dead,”
It said that all the above 78 animals are schedule animals under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and are listed under the appendix of CITES. The animals were seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962. The statement said that live animals have been sent to the country of origin and dead animals have been disposed of with proper hygiene measures. Further investigation is ongoing.
Scheduled animal refers to an endangered species that requires special protection. Authorities suspect the animals were trafficked for the international pet trade. If reports are to be believed, the pythons and king cobras have been sent to Thailand, while the dead capuchin monkeys were disposed of with proper hygiene measures.
