Bournvita: Along with Bournvita, which claims better growth and stamina of children, more than a hundred companies are selling their products in the health drinks market and on e-commerce. But now the government has imposed strictness on this. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a notification asking all e-commerce companies to remove all beverages including Bournvita from the category of ‘health drinks’ from their websites and platforms. The notification said that an investigation by a body constituted under the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has found that there is no definition of health drink under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
FSSAI had also given order
In this matter, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had directed all e-commerce companies to keep the food items sold on their websites in the correct category. FSSAI had clearly told the companies not to use words like health drink and energy drink with any beverage to increase sales. According to media reports, the market size of energy drinks and sports drinks in India is $4.7 billion. It is expected to grow with a CAGR growth of 5.71% till the year 2028.

What is the reason for issuing the notification?
Some time ago, a letter was written by NCPCR Chief Priyank Kanungo to the Commerce Ministry, State Government and Union Territory Consumer Affairs Department and FSSAI. In this letter he had requested that drinks and beverages should not be allowed to be sold in the category of health drinks. After this, action has been taken by the department.
