New Delhi : Companies manufacturing packaged food items in India will now be required to display nutrition level symbols on their products. According to media reports, FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) may make it mandatory to put nutritional labels on food packs. It has been said in the report that companies will be required to indicate the amount of energy, saturated fat, total sugar, sodium and essential nutrients on 100 grams or 100 ml packets of food items.
New labeling on food packs
According to a report in the English-language newspaper Hindustan Times, people familiar with the matter said that India’s food regulator may introduce new labeling on the front of packaged items, which will inform consumers about the nutritional elements added to food items. Will tell A senior official told on the condition of anonymity that several reforms are in the pipeline for the food regulatory ecosystem and this is one of those reforms. The food regulator had initiated discussions on similar lines last year and also proposed an Indian Nutrition Rating for packaged foods sold in the market based on their overall nutritional status.
Notification issued on 13 September 2022
The official said that FSSAI has notified FSS (Labelling and Display) Amendment Regulations 2022 on 13th September 2022, in which Indian Nutrition Rating has been proposed as a format for front of pack labeling to make informed food choices. Is. Sarvdharan was to give comments in this matter by November 18, 2022. The comments received are now being considered. The official said nutritional labeling on the front of the pack has already been implemented in some western countries and has been found effective in helping consumers make an informed choice.
NIN did the study
Hyderabad-based National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) has concluded a recent study that the institute conducted on the acceptability and potential use of different formats of nutrition labels in promoting informed food choices. In a statement released on the results of its study, NIN said the study suggests that warning labels may deter the choice and consumption of moderately unhealthy foods, while ratings such as Health Star or Nutriscore identify healthful substances among available foods. May help with identification.
