Famous music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan, who was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer in a hospital in Kolkata, died on Wednesday. The 55-year-old artist was on a ventilator and was receiving oxygen support. An official of the private hospital where Khan was admitted said, “We tried our best but failed. He died around 3:45 pm.”
Speaking about Rashid Khan’s death, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “It is a big loss for the entire country and the entire music industry. I am in great pain because I still can’t believe that Rashid Khan is dead.” No more.” The musician’s health had deteriorated after he suffered a cerebral attack last month. The 55-year-old man from Rampur-Sahaswan family initially received treatment at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital. However, at a later stage, he chose to continue his treatment exclusively in Kolkata. According to sources, Khan was initially responding positively to the treatment.
Born in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, Rashid Khan, who is also the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, received his early training from his maternal grandfather, Ustad Nisar Hussain Khan (1909–1993). His musical talent was first recognized by his uncle Ghulam Mustafa Khan, who provided his initial training in Mumbai. However, initial training was received from Nisar Hussain Khan at his residence in Badaun.
At the age of eleven, Rashid Khan gave his first concert and the following year, in 1978, he graced the stage at the ITC concert in Delhi. Subsequently, in April 1980, when Nisar Hussain Khan moved to the ITC Music Research Academy (SRA) in Calcutta, Rashid Khan, at the age of 14, also became a part of the academy.
Khan dared to blend classical Hindustani music with lighter musical styles and engaged in experimental collaborations, including concerts with Western instrumentalist Louis Banks. Additionally, he demonstrated his versatility by participating in jugalbandhis, sharing the stage with sitarist Shahid Parvez and other musicians.
