That era was different. In those days, every boy wanted to woo girls by playing guitar, so I also started doing theatre, so that I could impress girls. It is true that I am also active in the music field along with acting. I have my own band and have worked as a music composer along with acting in ‘A Suitable Boy’. People ask how do you manage to work in both the fields at the same time, then I say that you have to face a lot of rejections in acting. I have also faced a lot of rejections. After that, I work on my music in whatever time I get. My father always says that time flies in music. Anyway, in today’s time being multi talented is not a crime but it is good for you. Now whenever I get time, I do riyaz, work on music and write at the same time.

There used to be talk of lead or supporting actor till a few years ago, but today the classification of the character has become negligible. The main reason for this is the OTT platform. Ever since OTT has come, the distinction between lead and supporting actor has disappeared. Now the story is important, because there is so much time on OTT that one cannot keep a theme around one character for the entire time. You need a lot of characters to make the story grow. In such a situation, due to getting more time for those characters, they also get a lot of space. You must have seen that many times the supporting actor gets footage and praise more than the lead. It is up to the actor how he deals with his character. As far as I am concerned, I have never chosen a role by looking at the length of the characters. I prefer to play roles that impact the story, characters that the audience remembers, even if they are supporting or minor characters.

I was born in Delhi but have lived in Mumbai. Whenever I come to Delhi, I make sure to attend the shrine of Hazrat Nizamuddin. Once I stayed in Delhi for two months for the rehearsal of ‘Monsoon Wedding’, then I went to the dargah everyday for 40 consecutive days. Every day he used to go to Dargah and listen to Qawwali there. There I find a different kind of peace. There is a scientific logic behind going continuously for 40 days. It is said that if you want to imbibe anything within yourself, then it should be done continuously for 40 days. With this, that thing will get absorbed in you.

My character name is Triloki in the web series ‘Chuna’. Triloki is a hypocrite, a liar, a mean, a cunning person. It is difficult to recognize which form he takes. This is the most different of all the characters I have played so far. I have not done such a character till date. I am also in ‘Rocky and Rani’s love story’. I have a guest appearance in this. Also, the Indo French film is minimal. It is being directed by Rumana Molla and I am paired opposite Saba Azad.

going to shoot not shopping

I have been coming to Lucknow for many years. Did theater here and also gave performance with his band. I remember in 2009 I came here to perform. Since then I have been coming. The special thing is that the people of Lucknow have a very good understanding of music. He listens not only to the tune, but also to the words. Right now when I was shooting here, it did not feel like I am somewhere outside. It is very nice to walk and do shopping here. When I was coming here for shooting, I had already told my wife, ‘I am going to shoot, not shopping.’ Apart from this, I have bought a lot of perfume from here. White oud and jasmine flavors are my specials in this.
