Neha Joshi’s film and TV bucket is full in Marathi language, but now she is trying to establish her foothold in the Hindi industry. He has started it with his character of Janine played in ‘Drishyam-2’. After the film, she is seen as a heroine in the TV serial ‘Doosri Maa’. His 17 years of experience says that this will take time, so there is no panic in him. She is making slow but strong strides. He is clear about everything. Then whether it is your marriage at home among selected people or your commitment to work immediately after that. Neha spoke candidly to us about TV being progressive, doing Hindi films, being a part of OTT, the importance of story and the complex of Marathi actors.

I have met my husband only three-four times after marriage.
Last year on 16th August I got married to actor Omkar Kulkurni and on 21st August we were back busy shooting. Since then till now we have been able to meet only three or four times. He has come to Jaipur only a few months back. This is possible only when you have your own people who trust you. Understand your feelings and thoughts. For this you also have to trust yourself. You must know that what you are doing is right. If you consider yourself guilty, then you will see a difference in things. If I was not completely confident about work immediately after marriage, I might have apologized again and again that I made a mistake. If I know that I will not be able to do it because I am busy with my work then I will not be able to do it. If it was your job, you would have been doing it too. This is a simple matter. I cannot compare myself with Omkar as he does very big projects. I believe in myself. I also got married in a very simple way. Only 20-25 people came and the marriage took place in the house. It was my condition that I only needed so many people. Apart from the mangalsutra, I did not buy any other jewelry for the wedding. I am not taking any dig at those who buy jewelery on marriage. The one who does, it is good for him, the one who does not, there should not be any coercion on him. Indeed, a wedding is an occasion for celebration. In the olden days, there were less opportunities for festivals and celebrations, but nowadays there is celebration on every occasion. According to what they meant, they have changed, so things should also change now.

Had to work hard on the customs and language of UP

In the TV show ‘Doosri Maa’, I had to work on my language to be a part of the Gupta family. It is a UP based show and I am a Maharashtrian girl. In this context, I had to work hard to mold myself in that form. After that there are traditions, rituals and different customs of UP, they had to be understood. For example, it is normal for the women of UP to wear pallu on their head. It is just like the way we run mobile. To mold that thing naturally inside you. You have a different relationship with each member of the house, so that too had to be understood. One of our actors Sandeep is from UP, who is playing the role of my sister-in-law’s husband in the show, got to know a lot from him. The research team helped a lot. In such a situation, a little struggle had to be done to understand these things.

Good work should give you a good night’s sleep

I give importance to the story of a show before saying yes to it. Then it is okay if vanity van is not available in the show or if I have to sit on a chair on the way for that. If I don’t get a good story and get a vanity van, I will get restless. A good story is one that makes a difference, instills hope for change in the society. Then even if you get less money for a good story, it doesn’t matter. It is most important to get satisfaction and to sleep peacefully at night. While sleeping at night, it should feel that I have done some good work and while waking up the next day in the morning, it should feel that I am going to do something good. This is very important for me.

I was a little nervous before the show
At the beginning of any project, there is some restlessness, nervousness. There were two-three other things, about which there was excitement. I am playing a heroine for the first time in a Hindi TV show. I was afraid whether the audience would accept me or not. Above all, this is such a topic, which was new to the people. You can consider it a bit progressive in terms of TV. If this subject was there in the film, it would have been easily accepted because there is an option to watch or not watch. There is only one TV in the house. If someone is watching it, then you will also have to watch it. Acceptance of this subject by the audience was also a challenge. Our Writer-Director worked very hard for this.

change takes years

Neha Joshi said- it takes many years for change to come

There is a great need for TV to be progressive. From rickshaw pullers, maids working at home to employed people and big businessmen, there is TV here. In such a situation, TV needs to change with time. I was telling someone that if TV changes after 10 years, it will be said that we were in its initial phase. We are trying to make the ‘second mother’ such that it brings change in the society. Its subject is the same. Not compromising on its quality. In TV, it is often imposed that the audience likes mother-in-law and daughter-in-law and politics in the house. I believe that if we try to show them something different, then only they will know things. However, it takes years for change to happen.

it takes time for things to click

My character of Jaini in ‘Drishyam-2’ was well received. I want to do Hindi belt films but these things will take time. It doesn’t happen that a film comes and you start getting offers galore. It takes time for things to click. After being in the acting industry for 17 years, I understood this thing. Anyway, the director may like my acting, but I should also like the story. Everything has to be seen. Nothing can be selected just like that. If I start dreaming of many films after one film, I will only get disappointed because everything comes in time. Whatever character is in your destiny, you will definitely get it. As far as OTT is concerned, it is difficult to go to the third screen with this show at the moment, but if I get a good character in future, I will definitely go there.

Being Marathi should not be a complex
There is a lot of literature in Marathi. For many years, films, television, theater shows used to be literature based only. Now the way the society is changing, the Marathi industry has also changed. Change should be taken to the extent that identity is not lost. I am not saying that they should not develop. The world is changing so fast that you cannot say that I will not use mobile. Even after using mobile, the original Neha should remain the same. I thought things had veered off track in Marathi but are now back on track. Content is important in Marathi. I am also working in Hindi industry along with Marathi. A Marathi artist has a complex of being Marathi, which is unnecessary. When someone speaks Punjabi, his Punjabi is heard in Hindi but if someone speaks Hindi in Marathi, he is teased. It is pointed out to him that your Hindi is coming in Marathi. When a Punjabi speaker speaks Hindi, he is not pointed out.
