The third generation of Deol family i.e. sunny deol Rajveer Deol’s younger son is soon going to make his debut in Hindi films with Rajshri banner’s film ‘Dono Se’. He is proud of his family’s great acting legacy and hopes that he will not disappoint his family’s fans. If they are disappointed, he will want to work harder to live up to their expectations. Highlights of Rajveer’s conversation with Urmila Kori about the film.
Have you ever been to your father’s film sets?
I have gone to the sets of my father’s film ‘Champion’. Manisha Koirala ji was with him in that. This film was shot in Ramoji Rao Film City, Hyderabad. I was quite bored while watching the shooting. I must have been five and a half at that time. Retakes were happening continuously. The same scene was happening again and again. There was nothing that would excite me enough to go there again and again. After that I used to shy away from going to film sets.
Your grandfather is a legend for Hindi cinema. Father is a superstar. When did you realize his popularity? Any negativity?
Initially I thought this was normal. Everyone has such fans. Whenever we went out, our family got a lot of attention from people. Sometimes I was confused as to why my dad was getting so much attention. Why is everyone behind them? Many times we met very nice people. There have been many bad experiences also. If someone could not be found, he would start saying wrong things. To be honest, these things affected me very badly. I became very calm. Started living more within myself.
There was acting in the family, so was it easy to decide to become an actor?
To be honest, it was not my intention to become an actor since childhood. After watching father’s film ‘Border’, I wanted to join the army. I am good at basketball, so at one time I wanted to become a basketball player. I also like playing video games, so I thought I would become a gamer. Then acting attracted me. Acting is such a genre through which I can do all the characters.
How did Rajshree’s film ‘Dono’ reach you?
I came to know that Sooraj sir’s son Avneesh is going to direct the film. He has also written the story of the film. You may not believe me, but I met him through the casting director. Very few people know about me. Everyone thinks that Sunny sir has just one son. Now everyone is getting to know that he has two sons. I have gone through three auditions for the film ‘Dono’. Avneesh is very serious about his film. He used to take decisions only after being completely assured. After two weeks of auditioning, I came to know that I had been selected for the film.
What is the name of your character? Do you feel connected to it too?
The name of my character is Dev Shroff. I have a habit that whenever I read a script, I start finding myself in it. I feel connected to the character even while watching the film. There is not everything in common between the characters of ‘Both’ and me, but there is a lot in common. That’s why it was easy to play the character.
Poonam Dhillon’s daughter Paloma is being launched with you. What was his reaction?
She is a very good co-star. There is no pride in him at all. I have also done acting workshops. Usually, many times she starts feeling so insecure that she starts creating more scenes than necessary. Paloma is very supportive, so it was a very good experience with her.
Were you nervous on the first day of shooting and did your family come to the shoot?
The entire family had come except dad, mother, brother, uncle-aunt, their two children and grandfather. The first day of shooting was in Colaba, Mumbai. It was raining a lot that day. We had to reach Colaba from Juhu. We did puja at 4 in the morning, then reached the shoot at 5:30. The whole family was together, so I was very nervous. I was thinking that the shoot might get canceled due to rain, but the shoot started. I was going to do the first scene, but I was nervous. That’s why I moved very fast, so that the shoot could be done as soon as possible. Somehow the shot went OK and I came back to life.
Your father read the script. What was his reaction?
My dad speaks very little. He just said good.. It is his habit. He doesn’t speak much, so that I don’t take too much pressure.
Your father launched your brother. Was your launch not planned under the direction of your father or through Vijeta Films from which every Deol has been launching?
This was what was going to happen initially, but when my brother’s film failed, we all got very upset. Dad was very disappointed with both the production and direction. He clearly said that I will not launch you. It would be better if I give you to someone else. After that it was decided that Vijeta Films would not launch me.
Your brother Karan’s films have been unsuccessful. Has this increased pressure on you?
Yes, very much. I was also the assistant director of ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’. I was completely attached to him for three years. When the film failed, my confidence was completely shaken.
You are the third generation of the Deol family. What tips has dad given you?
My father says that do that thing in which you believe, forget everything else. You have got a good personality. You have had a good upbringing. It may take a little longer for people to connect with you. In such a situation, there is no need to become bold and cool to show others, which everyone becomes these days.
Every day a new talent is joining the industry. How ready to compete?
I am not afraid of competition. I would also say that if I am not good, then after this film I will work more on myself. Apart from films, I am also open to OTT.
What are your special memories related to your grandfather?
When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time with him. I used to play cards with him. He used to recite his poetry to me. These are my special memories with him. Also watched Dadaji’s recently released film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’. Only he can do that. He has seen both the films. He liked my work. He said that you have done a good under play.
