Air pollution increases bone loss due to osteoporosis

Increased levels of pollutants such as nitrous oxide in the air can damage bones in post-menopausal women. In a study, scientists from the US-based ‘Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health’ found that the effect of nitrous oxide (NO) is twice as harmful to the waist and waist of post-menopausal women as compared to normal women. Previous studies on individual pollutants indicated adverse effects on bone mineral density, risk of osteoporosis, and fractures in older adults. The latest research, published in the journal eClinical Medicine, is the first to explore the association between air pollution and bone mineral density specifically in post-menopausal women and the first to explore the effects of air pollution mixtures on bone outcomes. Researchers have analyzed this through data collected through ‘Women’s Health Initiative’. It has more than 1.60 lakh women members from different caste groups.
They estimated exposure to air pollutants (PM10, NO, NO2, and SO2) based on participants’ home addresses. “Our findings confirm that poor air quality may be a risk factor for bone loss, independent of socioeconomic or demographic factors,” said Didier Prada, associate research scientist at Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. ‘We have evidence for the first time that nitrogen oxides, in particular, play a major factor in bone loss and the low back is one of the most susceptible sites,’ said Prada. Osteoporosis affects more women than men, and 80 percent of the more than 10 million Americans with the disease are women, the researchers said. According to the researchers, post-menopausal women are at a higher risk of this disease and statistics confirm that one in two women over the age of 50 have a bone fracture due to osteoporosis.
