The Supreme Court on Monday transferred all the FIRs lodged against comedian Munawar Farooqui to Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city for allegedly making remarks against Hindu deities and hurting religious sentiments during a show. Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice Sanjay Carroll extended the interim relief granted to Farooqui in connection with the ‘production warrant’ issued against him in Delhi by three more weeks.

The top court made it clear that it has not commented on the merits of the petition to quash it and if any petition is filed, it will be considered on its merits in accordance with law. On February 5, 2021, the apex court had released Farooqui on interim bail, staying the order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The Madhya Pradesh High Court had refused to grant him bail.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court, while denying him bail, had then said that promoting harmony is one of the constitutional duties. According to the FIR, the comedy show (in which the alleged remarks were made) was organized on January 1, 2021 at a cafe located in Indore’s 56 Dukan area. Eklavya Singh Gaur, son of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Malini Laxman Singh Gaur, lodged a complaint against Farooqui and others.
