Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya last month, calling it a farce devoid of representation of lower castes. Gandhi took aim at Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who attended the event, while questioning the absence of members of Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Dalits and other backward castes.
News agency ANI quoted him as saying, “Did you see the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple? Was there even a single OBC face there? There was Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Narendra Modi.” The Gandhi family was addressing a public meeting during their Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in UP’s Prayagraj on Sunday.
He said, “People who constitute 73 per cent of the total population of the country were nowhere to be seen during the programme. BJP would never want them to take over the reins of the country.” Gandhi once again strongly advocated the need for caste census and described it as an essential tool to highlight social inequalities. He said, “How much wealth do 73 percent castes have in this country? Caste census is an X-ray of the country. Everything will be revealed through it.”
PM Modi and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat presided over the Ram temple ceremony, which was attended by thousands of celebrities, politicians and dignitaries. However, opposition parties including the Congress decided not to attend the event, accusing the BJP of exploiting it for political gains.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is scheduled to enter his former Lok Sabha constituency Amethi on Monday. It coincides with the four-day visit of Union Minister Smriti Irani, who defeated Gandhi in the 2019 general elections.
This is only the second time since 2019 that both the leaders will be present in Amethi together, the previous instance being separate campaign events during the 2022 assembly elections.
