Kalaburagi. The country’s top junior tennis player Aryan Shah, who made it to the main draw after two tough qualifying rounds, registered an upset win over fourth seed Siddharth Rawat in his round of 16 tie at the ITF Kalaburagi here on Thursday.
The 18-year-old, after coming close to defeat twice in the match, emerged victorious in a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(3) to reach the quarter-finals at the Chandrashekhar Patil Stadium . Aryan Shah also impressed in his first round match against Adil Kalyanpur.
Apart from Aryan, three other Indians including in-form player and fifth seed Ramkumar Ramanathan, sixth seed Rishabh Agarwal and giant killer Manish Sureshkumar also made it to the last eight stage. Second seed Matsuda Ryuki of Japan, his compatriots Ryotaro Taguchi and Seita Watanabe and seventh seed David Pichler of Austria were the other quarterfinalists.
Ramkumar was made to work hard by wild card entrant Kabir Hans before registering a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win. In the deciding set, Ramkumar dominated and took a 5-0 lead, before Kabir won the next Showed some glimpse of struggle by winning the game, but could not stop the senior player from winning the match.
