Ashes 2023: No regrets, Carey’s challenge to run out Bairstow, will not go out of the crease next time

Manchester: Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey has no regrets for controversially stumping Jonny Bairstow at Lord’s and said he too has been dismissed like this before. The manner in which Carey dismissed Bairstow in the second Ashes Test had sparked controversy and many experts termed it against the spirit of the game. On the fourth day of the match, Bairstow came out of the crease after leaving all-rounder Cameron Green’s bouncer, thinking that the ball was a ‘dead ball’, but Carey hit the ball on the wickets and thus the batsman was stumped. Carey said in Manchester ahead of the fourth Ashes Test, ‘I have also been dismissed like this on a few occasions and I have also tried to get batsmen out like this before. That’s how I got out in my first A-grade match in South Australia. I had then left the crease. I was disappointed, but then my captain came to me and he said that next time you will remember to keep your feet at the crease.
Australia won the match but the England audience booed them fiercely. ‘We had some immediate reactions,’ Carey said. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I fully respect that. Similarly, everyone is entitled to give their opinion on the spirit of the game.
