Australia captain Pat Cummins has refused to guarantee David Warner’s selection for the Manchester Test in the 2023 Ashes series. He has said that the team management will keep all its options open after the Headingley defeat. Warner is slowly inching towards the end of his Test career and the current series is all set to be his last Ashes. The 36-year-old’s selection has been hotly debated ahead of the five Tests against England, as he has struggled for form ahead of the tournament.
Cummins was asked if Warner could be dropped to accommodate Cameron Green and in-form Mitchell Marsh. The Australian skipper refused to guarantee a spot for the opener and said the team would keep its options open. He said – We will keep all our options open. We have 9 or 10 days now, so we are in no rush. Greenie should be fit for Manchester. We will watch the wicket, discuss and make the best playing XI.
Warner showed some struggle in the Lord’s Test and scored an aggressive half-century in the first innings. However, he disappointed once again at Leeds as he was dismissed cheaply by tough rival Stuart Broad. He has dismissed Warner a record 17 times in his Test career. Before the match in Manchester, England would like to win the Headingley Test by three wickets and make the series 2-1.
