New Delhi . Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed his 8th 10-wicket haul in the first Test in Dominica and shared the joint-highest 10-wicket haul with Anil Kumble after thrashing West Indies with his finesse and spin (12-131) The takers became Indians.
He is just one step short of Kumble’s record of 35 five-wicket hauls in an innings in Tests.
A century from debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal (171 runs) enabled India to wrap up the match by the third evening. India’s highest wicket-taker in Tests and Geocinema expert Anil Kumble hailed the off-spinner’s massive effort, the best by any Indian in the West Indies.
Kumble said, “Ashwin plays with the mind of the batsmen. It is not just about the skills you have. It’s also an ability to transfer pressure onto the batsman which you can see in every batsman you face in R Ashwin, you can see it in his body language.”
Kumble also observed that Ashwin made good use of the crease against the home side’s left-handers, especially the way he dismissed opener Tejnarine Chanderpaul. He said, “He bowled wide out of the crease coming to the left-handed batsman. Once the left-handed batsman thought the balls would come in, then Ashwin bowled a beautiful ball to Chanderpaul which turned a bit and took him off stump.
The former India captain and coach also praised Ashwin’s ability to read the pitch and bowl accordingly.
