Asia Cup opened the way for ODI World Cup, Pakistan had to surrender before BCCI

New Delhi: Ending months of uncertainty over the Asia Cup, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Thursday announced that the tournament will be played from August 31 to September 17 on a hybrid model with four matches in Pakistan and nine in Sri Lanka. . The impasse over the ODI tournament ended last week when the Jay Shah-led ACC approved the Pakistan Cricket Board’s hybrid model. The BCCI had clearly stated that it would not send its team to Pakistan due to the ongoing political tension between the two countries. ACC said in a statement, “We are pleased to announce that the 2023 Asia Cup will be held from 31 August to 17 September. Will be played in which teams from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Nepal will participate. The tournament will be played on a hybrid model with four matches being played in Pakistan and the remaining nine in Sri Lanka. This season the teams will be divided into two groups and the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super-4 stage. The top two teams of the Super-4 stage will play the final. Pakistan will have matches in Lahore while Sri Lanka will have matches in Kandy and Pallikal.

The way to the World Cup opened
With the approval of the Asia Cup schedule, the Pakistan team’s arrival in India for the ODI World Cup in October-November has also been decided. Both the teams are likely to play in the league stage on October 15 in Ahmedabad. ICC CEO Geoff Allardyce and chairman Greg Barclay are understood to have met PCB chairman Najam Sethi in Karachi last month after which it was decided that Pakistan would not put any conditions on its participation in the World Cup if it was awarded four Asia Cup titles. The matches should be allowed to be held in their own country as it has the hosting rights.

India-Pak two matches fixed
To play the tournament without Pakistan, the broadcasters would have paid only half the money to the ACC as two matches between India and Pakistan were already fixed and the third would have happened if they reached the final. PCB chairman Najam Sethi said, “I am happy that our proposal for a hybrid model has been accepted. This means that PCB will continue to host the tournament and matches will be held in Pakistan. The neutral matches will be held in Sri Lanka as the Indian team cannot come to Pakistan. Our cricket lovers would have been happy if Indian team had come to Pakistan after 15 years but we understand the position of BCCI. Like PCB, BCCI also has to take approval from the government.
