Asian Championship: Akash Dahiya reaches bronze medal round

Indian wrestlers Akash Dahiya and Anirudh Kumar kept themselves in contention for a bronze medal at the Asian Championships, but their three other teammates crashed out of the tournament after losing at different stages of their respective weight categories here on Friday. Akash, competing in the non-Olympic 61kg category, started with a close 10-8 win over Uzbekistan’s Sardar Ruzimov and followed it up with an easy 7-3 win over Korea’s Sanghyeon Son in the quarterfinals.
He could not overcome the challenge of Asil Aitkin of Kazakhstan in the semi-finals and lost his match on the basis of technical superiority. Now he will face Enkhbold Enkhbat of Mongolia. Yash Tushir (74 kg) bowed out of the competition after losing to Kazakhstan’s Syrbaz Talgat on technical superiority in his repechage stage. Sandeep Singh Mann (86 kg) also made an early exit. He lost his qualification match to Tatsuya Shirai of Japan 0-5.
Vinay also bowed out in the 92kg qualification round after losing to veteran wrestler Adilet Devlumbayev of Kazakhstan. Anirudh Kumar started with a 3-0 win over Pakistan’s Zaman Anwar in the 125 kg weight category, but lost to Iran’s Amir Hussain Abbas Zare in the quarter-finals on technical superiority. The door to the bronze medal opened for Anirudh as the Iranian wrestler reached the finals.
He will now face Shamil Magomed A Sharipov of Bahrain for the bronze. Udit (57 kg, silver), Abhimanyu (70 kg, bronze) and Vicky (97 kg, bronze) had won medals for India on Thursday. The men’s freestyle competition will end today and the women’s competition will begin on Saturday.
