New Delhi. Around 500 athletes, including Olympic and World Championship medal winners, will compete in the Asian Track Cycling Championships to be held here from February 21 to 26. In this, 42 cyclists from India will strive for the title. This is overall the sixth time that India will host the competition. The country has previously hosted the Asian Track Championships in 1989, 2005, 2013, 2017 and 2022.
Pakistan team will not participate in the competition. Pakistan players are facing difficulties in obtaining travel documents in their country. Asian Cycling Confederation General Secretary Omkar Singh said in a press conference, “Pakistan’s athletes have been approved by our Foreign Ministry. He has informed us that he is not coming because his ministry has not been formed after the elections.
The points collected by riders from this competition will be included in the Olympic qualification process. However, no Indian player is close to making it to the Paris Olympics. Cycling Federation of India (CFI) general secretary Maninder Pal Singh said, “There has been a lot of improvement in the performance of our cyclists in recent times and they need top level competitions.” We are going and our aim is to qualify our cyclists for the 2028 Olympics.
The championship will be organized at the state-of-the-art cycling velodrome of the Indira Gandhi Indoor Complex here. In this, players from 18 countries including China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan and Iran will compete in various categories. It includes men and women, junior men and women and para events. Led by former junior world number one Ronaldo Singh, the Indian players will be looking to make a mark with their performances in the competition. Along with Ronaldo, David Beckham, Rojit Singh and Aso Alben would like to get a place on the podium.
