After NSD, I started working in Marathi theatre. I did a play called Dandi with Gandhi. That play was done in Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi which Kamal Haasan saw and called me to work in ‘Hey Ram’. In such a way ‘Hey Ram’ was found. I also got the National Award for this. Then Madhur Bhandarkar saw this film and he gave me a job in ‘Chandni Bar’. This is how my cycle continued. In the family, I have a sister who is four years younger than me. She lives in Pune.

I have done very few comedy roles in 25-30 years. Mostly I have played serious roles only. Earlier ‘Chalis Chaurasi’ was a comedy film starring Naseeruddin Shah and KK Menon. But over all I have done very few comedy films.

When I was talking about writing with Ashish Kapadia, the director of Khichdi, I became jealous of him. He has done a wonderful writing of Happy Family. I wish I could write something like this.

What are you reading and watching these days?

I have been working on a comedy series for a few days, watching and understanding. From the big comedy series Friends to Big Bang Theory, I am watching shows. The impact of these shows can be seen a lot. There are many people who are doing PhD and writing research papers on such shows. They are being seen a lot even in lockdown. I think Happy Family also has this scope. I am currently watching this genre and understanding.

I do not click too many photos. I always ask actresses that I wonder how you put different photos. I don’t have patients at all.

I was born in Dalgam, Karnataka. This is where my family is from. My father’s business was in Solhapur, that’s why I grew up here. I was brought up in a middle class family. I wasn’t that good in school. My parents wanted me to become a doctor or an engineer. Somehow I got admission in engineering but I dropped out. Then I joined college in arts and here in college I performed on stage for the first time.
