Better air quality reduces suicide incidents: study

A study conducted in China has revealed that reducing the level of air pollution can reduce the suicide rate. Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara estimate that China’s efforts to reduce air pollution have prevented 46,000 deaths by suicide in the country in just five years. The study report has been published in the journal ‘Nature Sustainability’. It says that air quality is one of the major factors affecting mental health.
The researchers said issues like air pollution are often viewed as a physical health problem that causes chronic diseases like asthma, heart disease and lung cancer. The research team previously studied the effect of temperature on suicide rates in India and found that extreme heat increases such incidents.
The team was intrigued by the fact that suicide rates in China have declined more rapidly than in the rest of the world. The country’s per capita suicide rate was higher than the global average in 2000, but two decades later it has fallen below that average, researchers said.
