Better passing and coordination needed to deal with Australia’s aggressive style: Rupinder

Former Indian drag flick specialist Rupinder Pal Singh feels the Indian men’s hockey team can deal with Australia’s aggressive playing style with better defensive coordination and better passing. Recently, India suffered a 0-5 defeat against Australia in the five-Test series held in Perth.

This tour was disappointing for India whereas before this the team had performed very well in the FIH Pro League. The team is expected to perform better than or equal to the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in the Paris Olympics to be held in July-August. Singh, a member of India’s 2014 Asian Games gold medal-winning team, however, is not too worried about the result against Australia as he feels the team improved with each match.

Rupinder Singh told ‘PTI Video’, “We lost the first match 5-1 but after that the team improved and the score remained equal. Considering that we missed some opportunities, some work needs to be done before the Olympics. This series was for the preparations for the Paris Olympics in which new variations and players were tried.

When asked about how to deal with Australia’s aggressive style, he said that new types of passing can be dealt with. “Tackling Australia requires a high level of coordination, with ball transfer from defender to defender, quick passes to defenders in midfield, overhead passes which can be beneficial in tackling this style,” he suggested.
