Narayanpur (Chhattisgarh): West Bengal became the first team to book its place in the quarter-finals of the Swami Vivekananda Under-20 National Men’s Football after defeating Uttarakhand 3-0 at the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram Ground on Tuesday. Before the last match day in Group E, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu were the other two teams competing for a place in the last-eight.
However, the latter could only earn a gasping draw against already eliminated Punjab and were eliminated from the U-20 men’s NFC for the first time. West Bengal took an early lead in this match with Santanu Naskar’s goal in the third minute. Rahul Naskar and Shibam Munda scored the second and third goals in the 60th and 69th minutes respectively.
The former player is West Bengal’s top scorer in the tournament so far with three goals. While the winners topped Group E with seven points, Uttarakhand ended their campaign in third place with a solitary win over Punjab on the first day. West Bengal will face the winner of Group C in the first quarter-final on April 19.
