This is India’s lowest ranking since 129th in January 2017. However, the country’s worst ranking till now was 173 in 2015. The Indian team was ranked 102nd in the last FIFA rankings which was released on 21 December 2023. India lost 35.63 rating points from the previous ranking.
The Indian football team on Thursday slipped 15 places to 117th in the FIFA rankings, its worst ranking in seven years, due to its disappointing performance in the recent AFC Asian Cup.India had lost all three of its group matches in the AFC Asian Cup.

It is now ranked between Togo (116th ranking) and Guinea Bissau (118th ranking). India’s ranking among Asian countries is 22. Under the guidance of coach Igor Stimac, India lost 0-2 to Australia, 0-3 to Uzbekistan and 0-1 to Syria in the Asian Cup, due to which it did not get any points and the team could not even score any goals in it. Due to this, India remained at the bottom position in Group B of four teams.
World champions Argentina remain at the top of the rankings with no changes in the top 10. There has been a change in the ranking of the countries of Asia and Africa because their continental championship was held during this period. After Argentina, teams from France, England, Belgium and Brazil are included. Asian Cup champions Qatar jumped 21 places to 37th. Japan, although slipped one place but still tops the continental rankings. Asian Cup runner-up Jordan has gained 17 places to reach 70th position.
