In a special conversation with ‘ETimes’, Siddharth said, ‘Even four-five years ago when I was in Mumbai, I wanted to do stand-up comedy. I had a friend and I told him I wanted to do stand-up. I felt that this is what I was born for. I’ve been a very funny person. But due to other commitments, I could not pursue this talent further. When I came to the US, I saw a great stand-up scene. Then I started from the beginning. The lockdown gave me an opportunity to work on the content.
Siddharth became a standup comedian
Siddharth further spoke about his first stand up comic. Said, ‘I won’t lie but I was nervous. If you’re not nervous, you’re not doing something great. I have always been on stage for my other shows in India. So being on stage here too was not something I have done for the first time. But going on stage to laugh, was something I’d never done before. My first act went well and I got good response. But after that some shows fell flat.
Siddharth shifted to America
On shifting to America, Siddharth said, ‘The matter of coming here was in my mind for the last 6-7 years. I used to tell my friends Nikhil (Chinapa), Raghu (Ram) that I want to go to LA and work. But at that time there was no proper planning in my mind. I didn’t know anyone then. I also got a call from a matchmaking show on an OTT platform. But he wanted to shoot with me in India. And I’ve done this before. I wasn’t interested in finding love on TV. I knew some people here, but they did not help. I applied for a tourist visa and they googled me and asked why I was visiting. I said that I want to go on holiday with my mother. They gave me the visa in 5 minutes. I came here and fell in love with this place. I started connecting with people. I am not a known face here. Whoever comes here, if you are not Priyanka Chopra, you have to do other things to pay your bills. You have to do a lot. I know many mediocre personalities from India who came here and went back in 3-4 months. Today I am in very good condition. I have a green card and around this time next year, I will be able to file for citizenship. But it will depend on whether I want to give up my Indian citizenship or not.
Shows done despite knee surgery
Siddharth further told that he had injured his knee. He explains, ‘I had a knee injury last year. I had an injury before I started stand-up and then had surgery after a few stand-up shows. They wanted me to take rest and not go out for 2-3 months. Whatever the job, if you take a break soon after starting, you get rusty. I picked up my crutches and went to do the show. I did less shows but didn’t stop. I thought people sympathized with me because I was on my crutches. I didn’t want sympathy.
Siddharth was not getting work
Siddharth said, no one knew him in India. He also got a chance to work in Hollywood. He says, ‘Nobody was giving me work in the mainstream. Everyone wanted 21-year-old Siddharth, who was the angry young man in Splitsvilla. I was 21, but now I am 30. I have grown as an artist. Wherever I go for work, everyone wants Siddharth from Splitsvilla and Bigg Boss. I am not that person. I wanted to be big in life.
Bigg Boss changed Siddharth’s life
Siddharth told how much his life changed after the reality show. ‘Life changed for me after Bigg Boss as I became a household name. But Sid of Bigg Boss became so domineering that everyone wanted just that! I was not acting. People used to see me fighting at home, which was my reaction to the situation there. People used to tell me, bring Sid from Bigg Boss. how do i get it? Give me a script, I will work on it. I was stereotyped. I had a tattoo on my neck and the makers saw me as a villain. I removed my tattoos. They have different views. He would only like to work with star kids as they have huge PR budgets. They don’t want to work with someone who is nice. They don’t want to give chance to newcomers but that’s okay. I am in a better position than him.
Siddharth talked about mental health
Siddharth further said that mental therapy is necessary after the show. ‘I think everyone should be given Mentor Health Therapy. There are many restrictions on the show in India. Only the contestants are fighting with each other. Everyone has to speak in a limited time. You wake up and fall asleep with negativity. You are enemies of each other’s lives. Our times were very different. Mental health is a very important aspect in the show. Akashdeep Sehgal got mad, Pooja Mishra got mad, I was also shaken. Happens when you get free money and other things. But it is a very difficult game format.
