Calcutta High Court questions the State Election Commission on action taken in cases of violation of code of conduct

Kolkata. Calcutta High Court Chief Justice T.S. A division bench of Justice Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya on Thursday asked the West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) regarding violation of the model code of conduct after the state government launched a public outreach program called ‘Soorasori Mukhomontri’ (Direct Chief Minister). The bench also sought the commission’s reply on the allegation that the same number is being used for this program as was used for a similar program ‘Didike Bolo’ (Tell the Chief Minister) launched before the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. ) was to.

The bench was hearing a PIL filed by Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He has alleged that in view of the upcoming rural body elections, the model code of conduct is currently in force in the state. During this, such initiative of the state government is clearly a violation of the code of conduct.

The officer had questioned whether ‘Didike Bolo’ was a political campaign programme. So how can the same number be used for ‘Sorasori Mukhomontri’ which is an administrative initiative.

The bench directed the commission to file its reply in the second part of the court session on Thursday, only after which the matter would be taken up for hearing again.

The officer had originally filed the petition before a single-judge bench of Calcutta High Court Justice Amrita Sinha on Tuesday. But Justice Sinha refused to accept the plea and instead asked Leader of Opposition Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya’s bench. Accordingly, on Wednesday, the officer approached the Bench.
