Why there is controversy over ‘The Kerala Story’
The controversy over the film ‘The Kerala Story’ started only after the teaser release. This teaser of Sudipto Sen’s film was released in November 2022 last year. In this teaser, the character named Shalini Unnikrishnan aka Fathima Ba says that 32,000 women were converted to Islam in Kerala and recruited into the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization and she is one of them. Where there is a stir in the political corridors regarding the film, there are also demonstrations on the streets.
Muslim League said- Prove it happened with 32000 girls, will give 1 crore
The Kerala government and opposition leaders have demanded a ban on the film in the state. The CPM and the Congress allege that the film is an attempt to malign the state’s image. The figures of conversion of 32000 girls and joining terrorist organizations are also false. The Muslim Youth League in Kerala has even announced a reward of Rs 1 crore to anyone who can prove that 32,000 Malayali women were recruited into ISIS in Kerala.
Producer and director said – the film is not propaganda, it is the story of victimized girls
On the other hand, the film’s producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah in a conversation with ‘ETimes’ has clarified the controversy related to ‘The Kerala Story’. He said, ‘Our film is on such a problem of the state, which should be talked about. We have done research for this and on the basis of this we are showing the story of four such girls in the film. We are not running any propaganda, all we are saying is that we should think about the girls and youth who have suffered all this. The film’s director Sudipto Sen has also protested against calling the film propaganda. He says, ‘This allegation is very wrong. If we are not talking about your mind, it does not mean that we are spreading any propaganda.
