Sutak period is considered before lunar eclipse. The sutak of lunar eclipse on Sharad Purnima will start 9 hours earlier i.e. at 4:44 pm. Sutak will last till the end of the lunar eclipse i.e. till 2:24 pm. According to mythological belief, auspicious work should not be done during Sutak period. Pregnant women should avoid certain activities.

Pregnant women should not use sharp objects during the eclipse. Like do not cut vegetables, avoid sewing, embroidery, using scissors, knives. Doing so is inauspicious and has a negative impact on the mother as well as the child.

Keep remembering God during the eclipse. You should not keep negative thoughts in your mind and also stay away from situations of stress and controversy. Do not get angry and arrogant, keep yourself absolutely calm.

Pregnant women should also avoid sleeping during the eclipse. It is said that this has a negative impact on the intelligence of the child. By doing this the child becomes mentally retarded.

According to the scriptures, during the eclipse period, pregnant women should keep Tulsi Dal and recite Durga Path or the mantra of their favorite deity. Due to this, mother and child are not affected by evil forces.

After the lunar eclipse ends, a pregnant woman should take bath with holy water. It is said that this eliminates the effects of eclipse on both the fetus and the mother. One should not touch the idols during the Sutak period, apart from this, the doors of the temple are also closed so that the shadow of the eclipse does not fall on the idols. In the places where the shadow of eclipse falls, it has good and bad effects, hence during the eclipse period one should do chanting and penance to reduce its effects.

One should avoid cooking and eating food during lunar eclipse. One should not perform any kind of worship during this period. One should not sleep during lunar eclipse. During this period, pregnant women should not go out of the house. They should also not use knives or scissors. They should also avoid touching trees and plants during the lunar eclipse.

Whether the lunar eclipse is visible or not, it affects all the zodiac signs. It is believed that on the day of lunar eclipse, the Moon’s mantra ‘Om Son Somay Namah’ or Lord Shiva’s mantra ‘Om Namah Shivay’ should be chanted with Rudraksh rosary. This eliminates inauspicious effects.
