Warsaw, Poland). Five-time world chess champion Magnus Carlsen has won the 2023 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland, the second leg of the Grand Chess Tour (GCT).

Grandmaster and world number one Carlsen of Norway took home the first prize of $40,000 with a score of 24/36 on Thursday night.

In second place was local favorite and defending champion Jan-Christoph Duda, who led the lead going into the penultimate day and was just one point behind with 23/36. He was in position to win the final game against Carlsen, which would have sent the decision to a playoff. But he was only one point behind Carlsen.

Wesley So of the United States and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France tied for third with 21.5 points, while Levon Aronian finished fifth with 20.5.

The 2023 Grand Chess Tour Zagreb continues with the Superunited Rapid & Blitz in Croatia, taking place in Zagreb from 3-10 July and St Louis in the USA (12 – 19 November).

It will conclude with the final classical event, the Sinquefield Cup, to be held from 19 November to 3 December in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
