Chhath Puja 2023: During Chhath Puja, Sun God and Chhathi Maiya are worshipped. Starting from Nahay-Khay, on the second day of Chhath Puja, which lasts for four days, Kharna is offered, on the third day evening Arghya is offered and on the fourth day Arghya is offered to the rising Sun God. People who believe in Chhath Puja, whether in the country or abroad, wait the whole year to participate in this festival and keep fast. It is believed that the fast of Chhath is observed for the wish of having children, for the well-being, happiness, prosperity and long life of the children. What are the important things related to this festival which is also important to know.

Chhath Puja starts from Chaturthi Tithi of Kartik month and ends on Saptami day at sunrise i.e. by offering Arghya to the rising Sun. The fast is observed following the rules of this fast. People celebrate the festival of Chhath Vrat, a great festival of folk faith, with great pomp and show. This is a festival in which everyone comes together to worship Lord Sun on the banks of the river. In Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, the worship of Dala Chhath is celebrated with great pomp and show. Men and women observe this fast together.

Special importance of Chhath Puja: It is believed that by observing Chhath fast, Chhathi Maiya bestows blessings of wealth, husband, son and happiness and prosperity. By observing Chhath fast, one gets relief from skin diseases and eye diseases. This is one of the most difficult fasts. The fast lasts for 36 hours, but waterless fast is observed for more than 24 hours.

• Kharna, second day of Chhath Puja, 18 November (Saturday)

• Evening Arghya, third day of Chhath Puja, 19 November (Sunday)

• Arghya to the rising sun on the fourth day of Chhath Puja, Paran 20 November (Monday)

Kharna or Lohanda: Kharna is the second day of Chhath Puja, this year Kharna is on 18th November. Sunrise on this day will be at 06:46 am and sunset will be at 05:26 pm. Kharna or Lohanda is the day of resolution for the 36-hour waterless ritual, in which the devotees observe waterless fast for the whole day and do puja in the evening and receive prasad. There is a tradition of making Kheer made from cow’s milk and jaggery and offering of seasonal fruits by the devotee himself on an earthen stove.

First Arghya (offering to the setting sun): third day of chhath puja setting sun Evening Arghya takes place. Vrati and his family members come to Chhath Ghat and offer Arghya to the setting sun. There is a tradition of standing in water and offering Arghya by placing fruits and thekua in the soup. This year the evening Arghya of Chhath Puja will be offered on 19th November. Sunset on this day will be at 05:26 pm.

Second Arghya (offering to the rising sun): Arghya is offered to the rising sun on the fourth day of Chhath festival. Mahavrat is observed on this day. This year, Arghya will be offered to the rising sun on 20th November. Sunrise on this day will be at 06:47 am.

According to Mahabharata, Karna was a great devotee of Lord Surya and this festival was first started by Suryaputra Karna by worshiping Surya. Karna used to worship the Sun by standing waist-deep in water for hours every day and offer water to him. Even today, the same method of offering Arghya is prevalent during Chhath. There is another story in this regard that when the Pandavas had lost their entire kingdom to the Kauravas in gambling, Draupadi had observed a fast on Chhath. By this fast the Pandavas got back their entire kingdom.

Considering the importance of water and sun in life, Arghya is offered to the sun on the festival of Chhath. Take care of purity in Chhath Puja, do not commit these mistakes even by mistake

• During the days of Chhath festival, eat satvik food and do not eat non-vegetarian food.

• Do not eat garlic and onion during Chhath Puja.

• The fasting woman or man should not consume anything without offering Arghya to the Sun God.

• While making Prasad for Chhath Puja, do not spoil it even by mistake, keep small children away while making Prasad.

• For Chhath Puja, only soup baskets made of bamboo or brass should be used. Do not use steel or glass utensils.

• Prasad should be made in pure ghee only.

• Do not wear black colored clothes during Chhath Puja.

• Do not spread dirt even by mistake at Chhath Ghat or on the way.

Time of Arghya: Arghya will be offered to the setting sun on 19th November.

The time of sunset on 19th November is 5 o’clock. The sun will set in Gaya at 5.02 pm. In Bhagalpur the time of sunset is 4.53 pm while in Purnia the time of sunset is 4.50 pm. The timing of offering Sanjha Arghya in Jehanabad is 5.01 pm. The timing of Arghya in Muzaffarpur is 4:58 pm.

Talking about the timing of offering Arghya to the rising sun, the time of offering Arghya at sunrise on 20th November in Patna is 6.10 am. It is 6.09 in Gaya while it is 6.02 in Bhagalpur. Sunrise in Ranchi is 6.03 am and sunset is 5.03 pm. According to the Meteorological Department, it will be cloudy in the morning but there will be no rain. The minimum temperature in Jharkhand is expected to be 16 to 20 degrees Celsius and maximum 29 to 30 degrees Celsius.
