Climate change is harmful for children’s health

Cape Town : A top World Health Organization (WHO) official has said that pregnant women or mothers and children are vulnerable to the health effects of climate change. They also underscored the need for countries to make concerted efforts to promote integration or integration of health and climate change into regional and global plans. Dr. Anshu Banerjee, director of the Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health at WHO, Geneva, said that pregnancy is more vulnerable to climate-related harm.
Dr. Banerjee, who came here last week to attend the International Maternal Newborn Health Conference (IMNHC 2023), said that this happens due to many physiological changes during pregnancy and due to this women are sensitive to climate change. This is what happens with newborns, he said. Their immature immune systems and reduced ability to regulate their own temperature put them at greater risk of climate change-associated damages.
