Complaint filed against the makers of the film ‘Yaariyan 2’, know what is the reason

New DelhiFollowing a complaint by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the body responsible for managing Sikh places of worship in India, a police complaint has been filed against the makers of the film Yaariyan 2 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, the film Saurey Ghar courted controversy soon after its release. The SGPC accused the makers of the song of using a saber – a Sikh symbol – in an objectionable manner in a scene.

The song in the film features a clean shaven character wearing a kirpan. Sikhs argue that only bearded Sikhs are allowed to carry a kirpan.
Expressing anger on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), SGPC shared its opinion and demanded a ban on the film starring Divya Khosla Kumar, Meezaan Jaffrey and Pearl V Puri. The Sikhs have demanded that the video of the song be removed from all platforms and are seeking intervention from the government and digital platforms. The SGPC also filed a police complaint against the makers of the film. The film Yaariyan 2 is the much-awaited sequel to the 2012 film Yaariyan.

The makers of the film have clarified that the character is actually carrying a khukri and not a kirpan and that they do not intend to hurt or disrespect any religious belief. The SGPC has also appealed to the Government of India to stop this objectionable video or Any unacceptable scene in the said film should not be cleared for release by the Censor Board of Film Certification. If the visuals of the video are not removed, legal action will be initiated as per law for hurting the religious sentiments of the minority Sikh community.
