The film ‘The Kerala Story’, directed by Sudipto Sen, is facing controversies even before its release. With the release of the trailer of the film, it is now being criticized. The youth wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, DYFI and the youth league of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), including the Congress, have demanded a ban on the film’s release. The story of the film is about four women who convert from Hindu to Muslim and join the terrorist organization ISIS. In the teaser of the film, it was shown that 32,000 women in Kerala allegedly converted to Islam and were recruited by the terrorist organization. While voices of protest against the film are getting louder in the political circles, ‘The Kerala Story’ is going to release in cinema halls on May 5 next month. Its producer Vipul Amritlal Shah has now said in clear words on the latest controversy that his film is not about ‘Love Jihad’. He says that this film is the story of victimized women and girls.

Political parties opposed the film’s release, alleging that it was an attempt to portray the state of Kerala in a negative light. The CPI-M and the Indian Union Muslim League have demanded a ban on the film from releasing in Kerala. He alleges that this film has been made to fulfill the agenda of the Sangh Parivar. Filmmaker Vipul Shah has a special conversation with our colleague ‘ETimes’ on this whole controversy.

‘Our film is the true story of the victimized girls’

He says, ‘The Kerala Story is based on a true story of a girl who was going to Syria after converting her religion. On the way, she realized it was a mistake and ran away. Today, he is in a prison in Afghanistan. There are many girls in the prisons of Afghanistan. At least four are on record. So, that’s how we came to know about this story and then we started our research. Finally we have taken the story of three such girls in the film who fall prey to clever conversions and their lives are practically ruined. This is the kind of story that does when you tell it. Because when we were doing research then we realized that this number is actually huge. We met at least more than 100 girls. This is a great point. We have tried to tell the story with utmost honesty and truthfulness.

‘Love Jihad is a political term, we are just showing the truth’

Vipul Shah was asked that people are alleging that this film promotes love jihad? To this he said, ‘These are political words coined by the people. Our film is about the lives of these victimized girls. We are showing the truth. Now which word you want to choose for this, it is your choice. Through the film, we are trying to say that we should do something about this truth, for these victims.

‘When criminals don’t talk about communal harmony, why should we’

Is it difficult to show on screen a story which has some political interest and which hurts communal harmony? In response to this question, Vipul Shah says, ‘We have to stop hiding by saying that it is very sensitive and therefore we should not do it. or that it would disturb communal harmony. When criminals do this, do they think about communal harmony? They go and do whatever is their agenda. So, why should we be worrying about it? Sensitivity cannot be a one-way street. It has to be two-sided. If they are going to do this, someone or the other will come forward and expose this too.

‘Hope the Muslim community will come forward’

Vipul Shah further says, ‘For example, Sati Pratha was an evil practice in Hinduism, so we eradicated it, right? It was the Hindus who did the work of erasing it, right? Today I am expecting the Muslim community to come forward because I know there are crores of Muslims in this country and the world. Come on, put these people behind bars and stop this. Why does doing the right thing need to make a film? It is not possible that they are not aware. I think as a country we are very mature and we know how to deal with this kind of film. I am not worried about it. I think it was a very important subject to be told and that is what we are going to do.

No problem with the politicization of the film

Having politics in films is not a new thing. In such a situation, how do the makers avoid that their film gets politicised? In response to this question, Vipul Shah says, ‘Every political party has an ideology. They talk on whatever subject they see fit in their ideology. I don’t think politicization is always a bad thing. When logic deviates from the issue, it becomes bad. So far I have not seen anything that deviates from the main issue. So, I have no problem with political parties taking a stand on this. Whatever be their ideology. Just the victims should not be forgotten.

‘No copy of FIR has been received till now’

There is constant talk on social media that some people want to take legal action against the film. Vipul Shah says, ‘I have also heard that someone has tweeted about an FIR against us in Kerala. But till now we have not got any copy of it. If this has indeed happened, we will deal with it on legal grounds.
