A research has revealed that Covid-19 infection can temporarily affect the quality and number of sperm.
The COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns about its potential impact on male reproductive health. However, the impact of COVID-19 on sperm quality remains uncertain.
A team of Chinese researchers aimed to investigate the short-term and relatively long-term effects of COVID-19 infection on sperm quality. They included a total of 85 men with reproductive needs who underwent semen evaluation at Guilin People’s Hospital between June 2022 and July 2023.
Changes in semen parameters were analyzed in three specific time frames, within 6 months before COVID-19 infection, within 3 months after COVID-19 infection, and three to six months after COVID-19 recovery .
The results, published in the journal Virology, showed that sperm concentration and total sperm count were significantly lower after infection than before. However, in the recovery period, there was a significant increase in sperm concentration, total sperm count, progressive motility and normal morphology.
The most significant difference was seen in sperm concentration when comparing the three periods, which showed a significant decrease after infection but returned to normal levels after recovery from COVID-19.
“These findings suggest that COVID-19 may have some impact on sperm quality, particularly as evidenced by a decrease in sperm concentration after infection,” said Qi-Feng Zhang of the Department of Andrology at the Chinese hospital. “
“Our subsequent research across three specific time-frames, before COVID-19 infection, within three months of infection, and three-six months after recovery, showed a significant reduction in sperm concentration and total sperm count after infection, But after recovery within three to six months, the sperm count returned to pre-infection levels.
“This provides conclusive evidence for the impact of COVID-19 on sperm cycle-dependent parameters, in which severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection reduces sperm count, although only temporarily,” Zhang said. “
However, the researchers said that more research is needed to explore the long-term effects of these observed changes in semen parameters.
