Dada Kondke had told in an interview given to ‘Rediff’ in the year 1998 that in his childhood there was a lot of terror in his chawl and surrounding areas. The situation in the chawl where Dada Kondke’s family lived was very deplorable. People lived in houses like pigeon’s nests and there was filth everywhere. But Dada Kondke was a complete terror. Dada Kondke had told that if anyone in his area used to disturb or create mischief, he would thrash him. Whether it was a water bottle or a stone or a brick, Dada Kondke used to take revenge on whatever came in hand.
Whole family died except brother
But Dada Kondke, who used to put others in trouble, never thought that disaster would befall him even in his dreams. Dada Kondke’s entire family died in an accident and only the elder brother survived. It is not known when this incident took place, but that tragedy made Dada Kondke upset. Remembering that horrific incident, Dada Kondke had told, ‘I was badly broken. I used to wonder why did God do this to me? I didn’t talk to anyone. The food was not even eaten. I thought I would go insane. Then suddenly I spread that why shouldn’t I forget my sorrow and make people laugh? That’s how I started doing comedy.
Ration shop and work in local band
After the family left, Dada Kondke started working for Rs.60 at a shop in the nearby market named ‘Apna Bazar’ to make ends meet. He would do the work of packing ration at the shop and would get 60 rupees a month for this. In addition to his job at the shop, Dada Kondke started working with bands that played at weddings. He played almost every instrument with the band members and was well versed. Dada Kondke also got a chance to play in the band. People became convinced of his comedy and slowly the discussions spread all over Maharashtra. Dada Kondke’s last play was ‘Ichha Majhi Puri Kara’, which was such a hit that it ran for 1500 nights. Doda Kondke had become famous even in Goa.
Became an actor thanks to Asha Bhosle
Singer Asha Bhosle was also a fan of Dada Kondke. She used to go to see Dada Kondke’s ‘Ichha Majhi’ show in Mumbai. Due to him, Dada Kondke got a chance in films and then he did not look back. Dada Kondke made his acting debut in 1969 with the Marathi film ‘Tambadi Mati’. The film received the National Award for Best Marathi Feature Film. In the year 1971, Dada Kondke became a producer and made many films. He made many films. But there used to be double meaning dialogues and the titles were also double meaning.
