New Delhi. Delhi Police on Saturday said it has arrested a graduate (B-Tech) youth from Andhra Pradesh in connection with the deepfake video of actress Rashmika Mandanna. The video was widely circulated on social media. The accused, identified as Imani Naveen, 23, resident of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, had made the video to increase the number of followers on his fan page of Rashmika Mandanna on Instagram, an official said.
According to the police, the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of Delhi Police’s Special Cell was arrested on November 10 under sections 465 (punishment for forgery), 469 (forgery intended to cause harm to reputation) of the Indian Penal Code and information technology. The FIR was registered under sections 66C and 66E of the Act. The case was registered on the complaint of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). The official said that immediately after registering the FIR, the IFSO unit wrote to ‘Meta’ to obtain the URL and other details so that the accused who made the video and posted it on social media could be identified. ‘Meta’ is the parent company of social media platforms Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Threads.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (IFSO) Dr. Hemant Tiwari said that Naveen made a deepfake video of the actress just to increase followers and posted it on the fan page on October 13. He told that the accused had used AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology with the help of YouTube to make the video. Deputy Commissioner of Police said that due to the deepfake video, within two weeks the fan following of this page increased from 90 thousand to 1,08000. The officer said that when Naveen later realized that the case had become a national sensation and famous film personalities had started tweeting against the deepfake video made by him, he got scared and removed the controversial post from his Instagram channel and The name of the Insta channel was also changed. Tiwari said that Naveen had also deleted relevant digital data from his devices.
Another official said that during the investigation of the case, more than 500 social media accounts related to the alleged deepfake video were searched. The official said that after thorough analysis and questioning of suspicious persons, Naveen’s account on Instagram was finally traced. . A team comprising inspector Hansraj Swamy and sub-inspector Kapil Yaduvanshi, under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Manoj Kumar, was sent to Guntur in Andhra Pradesh and Naveen was nabbed from his house, he said.
Another officer said that Naveen told the police during interrogation that he is a big fan of Rashmika Mandanna and has created fan pages of Mandanna and two other film actors. The officer said he managed all three pages and uploaded explicit videos on them. He told that the fan pages of two other film stars had lakhs of followers, but the number of followers of Mandana’s fan page was less than one lakh. He said that a laptop and three mobile phones were recovered from Naveen.
