Olympic and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra failed to defend his Diamond League Final title and finished second with a mediocre performance of 83.80m here on Saturday. 25-year-old Chopra had to battle strong winds in the finals held at Hayward Field. Two of his attempts were fouls. His best performance of the day came in the second attempt. After fouling in the first attempt, he threw the javelin to a distance of 83.80 meters in the second attempt. His other attempts were 81.37m, foul, 80.74m and 80.90m. This is Chopra’s first performance of less than 85 meters in the current season. They qualified for the Diamond League Finals by finishing third. He won the Diamond League Finals title in Zurich in 2022 with an effort of 88.44m.

Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlech won his third Diamond League Finals title with an effort of 84.24 metres. He covered this distance in his sixth and final attempt. He was on top from the start with a distance of 84.01 meters in his first attempt. Wadlec, who won bronze and silver medals respectively after falling behind Chopra at the Budapest World Championships and Tokyo Olympics, has also won the Diamond League Finals titles in 2017 and 2018.

Chopra’s personal best performance is 89.94 metres. She had won two individual Diamond League events in Doha on May 5 and Lausanne on June 30 before winning a historic gold medal at the World Championships last month. After winning the world title in Budapest with an effort of 88.17 metres, he became only the third javelin thrower in history to capture both Olympic and World Championship titles. Just days after winning the World Championships title, he competed at the Zurich stage of the Diamond League on 31 August where he finished second behind Wadlach.
