Teaser of ‘The Kerala Story’
Let’s start this story from the beginning. About 4 months ago, the teaser of ‘The Kerala Story’ made in the production house of producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah was released. In which Ada Sharma, seen in a burqa, says, ‘My name was Shalini Unnikrishnan. I wanted to serve people by becoming a nurse. Now I am Fatima. An ISIS terrorist, who is lodged in a prison in Afghanistan. I’m not alone here. There are 32,000 girls like me who have been converted and buried in the deserts of Syria and Yemen. A dangerous game is going on to make a normal girl a dangerous terrorist. That too openly. Will no one stop it? This is my story. This is the story of those 32000 girls. This is Kerala story.

Allegation 1: Is The Kerala Story agenda-ridden?
There is an allegation on ‘The Kerala Story’ that this film is being called propaganda. Congress, CPI-M and Indian Union Muslim League have even said that this film has been made to fulfill the agenda of the Sangh Parivar. On these allegations, the producer of the film Vipul Shah himself replied to our associate website ‘ETimes’. He said that ‘we have made the film with full honesty and truthfulness. This story is about the conversion of four girls to Islam and getting them admitted into the terrorist organization ISIS. We have picked up this story after several years of research. There is nothing in it, due to which it can be called an agenda. We have only shown the truth, if you call this truth an agenda, then it is your choice.
Allegation 2: Where did the facts come from, this film makes false claims?
The makers of ‘The Kerala Story’ seem to be stuck due to the facts. The teaser claims that 32,000 girls from Kerala were converted and taken to Syria and Yemen to join terrorist organizations. Makers are constantly being questioned on this figure from where they brought this figure. On this, the director of the film Sudipto Sen said in a conversation with ‘Alt News’ that, ‘This figure of 32000 was not told by him but by CM Oommen Chandy himself in the Kerala Assembly.’
A report in ‘India Today’ states that in the year 2012, KK Latika of CPI(M) had raised a question regarding religious conversion in the assembly. In response to which, on June 25, 2012, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy presented the figures from the year 2006 to the year 2012 in the assembly. CM had said that, ‘7713 people accepted Islam in the year 2006-2012, while 2803 adopted Hinduism. Talking about women, till the year 2006-2009, 2667 girls had converted to Islam.
The point to be noted here is that there is a difference between the figures of CM Oommen Chandy and the claims being made in the film. Not only this, the Chief Minister did not mention anything about forced conversion or joining ISIS then. In such a situation, there is no solid proof regarding the claims of 32000 girls going to Syria.
Allegation 3: ‘The Kerala Story’ being compared to ‘The Kashmir Files’
Some users on social media compared ‘The Kerala Story’ to Vivek Agnihotri’s film ‘The Kashmir Files’ under the guise of ideology. On these allegations, the producer of the film Vipul Shah said in an interview to ABP News, ‘It is absolutely not right to compare any two films. Both are films made on the seriousness of different subjects.
Charge 4: Trying to defame Kerala
Congress Leader of Opposition in Kerala Legislative Assembly VD Satheesan alleged that ‘The Kerala Story’ is a film like sowing seeds of hatred. This film directly defames the state. On these allegations, the makers replied that each and every thing in this film has been added on the basis of evidence. He has collected facts after three years of research. The film tells the story of the manipulative conversion of four women from Kerala. We are only showing the truth. It is the point of view of the rest of the people who are unnecessarily debating it.
One thing out of a hundred things – where did the mistake happen?
Kudos to the courage of the makers of ‘The Kerala Story’ for choosing a serious subject. But the makers got caught in the numbers game here. His research turned out to be a bit weak. If you are claiming that you have made a film on truth, then you will have to present proof of everything. You have to show accurate facts so that you do not mislead the audience and the country on sensitive issues.
