Documentary based on Jharkhand’s rape survivor and her father’s struggle reaches Oscar

Ranchi. “To Kill a Tiger”, the only Indian film nominated for the Best Documentary category at the 96th Oscar, is based on the story of the struggle of a rape survivor girl from Jharkhand and her father.

This documentary shows how a farmer, resident of Bedo, Ranchi, struggles with the pressures of the police, politicians, bullies and villagers to get justice for his 13-year-old daughter who was a victim of gang rape.

Directed by Nisha Pahuja, this documentary was entirely shot in Bedo. The gang rape incident took place at this very place.

On 9 May 2017, a minor girl was returning home from a wedding in Bedo. During this time, three people kidnapped her and gang-raped her. From filing a police report against the accused to their arrest, he had to struggle.

After the arrest of the accused, he had to face pressure from local leaders and villagers to withdraw the case and allegations.

Not only this, the village people instead blamed the girl. The documentary is based on the mental torture the girl and her father had to endure during this entire fight.

A voluntary organization stood up in the fight between the victim and her father and the accused were sent to jail.

Before the Oscars, this film has been premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. There it won the Amplify Voice award. Apart from this, it has received a total of 19 awards in different film festivals.

The film is produced by David Oppenheim, Nisha Pahuja, Cornelia Principe and Andy Cohen.

It is noteworthy that the Oscar awards are to be given on March 11.
