Patiala: In an effort to remain in the race for the Paris Olympics, star wrestler Vinesh Phogat did not allow the selection trials in women’s 50 kg and 53 kg categories to begin and sought written assurance from the officials that the final trials of the 53 kg weight category would be held before the Olympics. After the ad-hoc committee of wrestling accepted her demand, Vinesh defeated Shivani 11-6 in the 50 kg weight category and secured a place in the Paris Olympic Qualification Tournament to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan next month.

The Jakarta Asian Games gold medalist, however, lost the 53kg bout to Anju 0-10 on the basis of technical superiority. According to Article 7 of the UWW, a competitor can be allowed to compete in one weight category on the same day, but Vinesh participated in the trials in two different weight categories on Monday. Before the showdown against Brij Bhushan, she used to compete in 53 kg category but due to Panghal getting the quota last in that category, she reduced her weight category.
