Mumbai : “Dukaan” is a film that definitely has a social message, but still sorely lacks in overall quality, appeal and depth. Director duo Siddharth-Garima come up with the story of surrogacy and its aftermath between the birth donor and the parents. Dukaan is the story of a girl who chooses an unusual path to earn money, but gets trapped when she realizes the love she has for her surrogate son. The directors chose a strong theme but failed to make any impact on the whole affair – be it telling such a story or highlighting a world that has not been highlighted or explored in mainstream communication.

Jasmine Patel (Monica Panwar), a fearless Gujarati girl is in love with Sumer (Sikandar Kher), a shop owner and single parent. She immediately decides to marry him and despite being against becoming a mother, she gives birth to a child soon after their marriage. Soon after, Sumer dies in a natural disaster and leaves behind his daughter, wife Jasmine and a newborn baby.

To make a living, Jasmine decides to become a surrogate at a local hospital under the supervision of a doctor. But life has its own challenges — Jasmine refuses to give her child to needy parents. Will she agree as per the contract or will her motherhood become priority? Siddharth-Garima certainly chooses a controversial subject, but as it progresses, it becomes very flawed. The mother’s son from her dead husband is nowhere to be found and she is seen crying for her surrogate child from the beginning. Who is making so much noise just for that?

The pair brilliantly mimics Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s tone and blends cleverly with Kriti Sanon-starrer Mimi and Rani Mukherjee-starrer Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. Furthermore, her heroine Jasmine tries to imitate Alia Bhatt’s acting in Gangubai Kathiawadi in several shows. But despite all this, the shop is an unavoidable representation of a social taboo that still exists.

For the actors, except Monica, Sikandar and maybe Himani Shivpuri, it was a race of consistently underperforming. Monali should stick strictly to singing. After Lakshmi’s failure, they should think seriously now. She looks heavy, her hair extensions are very distracting and of course, her co-actor, who plays her husband, is unbearable on-screen.

Looks like, Sidharth-Garima can’t handle too many labels and titles in one film. Dukaan is a film that definitely has a social message, but still sorely lacks in overall quality, appeal, and depth. If you’re up for some Garba dancing, want to delve into Gujarati culture, or are a Want to see newcomer Monica Panwar at her best, then take the risk for yourself, otherwise, Mimi and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke are still better bets.

Dainik Savera Times News Media Network gives this film 2.5 stars
