New Delhi: According to a study published in ‘The Lancet Public Health Journal’, every year spent in school or university can increase the expectation of living a longer life, while not attending an educational institution could be as dangerous as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption. The research identified data from 59 countries and included more than 10,000 data points collected from more than 600 published articles. The team of researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) found that education saves lives regardless of age, gender, location and social and demographic background.
They found that the risk of death decreased by two percent with each additional year of education. This means that people who completed six years of primary school had an average 13 percent lower risk of death. According to the study, the risk of death dropped by about 25 percent after graduating from secondary school, and 18 years of education reduced the risk by 34 percent. The researchers also compared the effects of education with other risk factors such as a healthy diet, smoking, and drinking too much alcohol, and found that the health outcomes were similar.
He said that for example, the benefit of 18 years of education can be compared to eating only moderate amounts of vegetables, rather than not eating vegetables at all. The researchers said missing school was as bad as drinking five or more alcoholic beverages per day or smoking ten cigarettes per day for 10 years.
Study co-author Tejre Andreas Ekemo said that education is important not only in terms of health but in itself. The researchers said that while the benefits of education are greatest for the young, people over the age of 50 and even 70 still benefit from the protective effects of education.
