Producer Ekta Kapoor has come out in support of Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar following the disappointing box office response to his latest release ‘Selfie’, in which he co-starred with Emraan Hashmi. The film, which is a remake of the Malayalam hit ‘Driving License’ (2019), was a flop, registering just Rs 2.5 crore at the box office. Selfie is Akshay’s sixth consecutive underperformer after ‘Bachchan Pandey’, ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, ‘Raksha Bandhan’, ‘Katputli’ and ‘Ram Setu’.
Ekta defended Akshay on her Instagram story, writing: “Akshay Kumar is the most reliable, relatable actor to work with!!!
This follows Kangana Ranaut’s previous attack on ‘selfie’, who compared the box office earnings of her last film ‘Dhaakad’ (2022) with ‘Selfie’. The actor wrote: “Karan Johar’s film ‘Selfie’ barely earns 10 lakhs on first day, I don’t see a single trade or media person talking about it, making fun of them the way they bother me Or forget threatening.”
The film industry is known for its cutthroat competition and harsh criticism. However, Ekta’s support for Akshay has highlighted the need to lift each other up in times of failure. As a prominent figure in the Indian television industry, Ekta’s words carry weight and may encourage others to speak up in defense of their colleagues.
